If you’re anything like me, you must have been wanting to learn how to make wooden signs at home. For do it yourself (DIY) persons, making a wooden sign is easy than you think. All you need are the right tools and proper instructions.
I got interested in DIY wooden signs when I needed to post a sign for our new shop. In comparison to paper signs, wooden signs are more durable and weather-resistant. After a few trials and research, I’m going to share with you the easiest way to make wooden signs and the tools that you’ll need.
What Are The Tools That You’ll Need?
Making your own wooden signs is easy with the right supplies. So before you begin, here are the items that you’ll need.
1. A Piece Of Wood
Of course, the first thing that you’ll need is a piece of wood. You can use any size of wood you want. If your wood has some rough spots, smooth them out with a sandpaper.
For the background color of your wood, you need to use a wood stain or any paint that you want. I prefer the chalk paint because it gives you a matte and shabby look. You need to choose a darker paint color if the words that you’re going to print are light.
3. Wood Finish (Optional)
This is optional but you can add more aesthetic value to your wood sign by adding a wood finish. Depending on how you want your finished wood sign to look, you can choose from matte to glossy. What I use is the Deft Clear Wood Finish which dries fast and easy to apply.
4. Paint Marker Or Acrylic Paint
To permanently trace the words on your wood, you need to use a paint marker. If you’re skilled enough to use a small brush, use acrylic paint. Choose a lighter paint if your background is dark or vice versa.
5. Other Supplies
Aside from the materials mentioned above, you also need these following supplies.
- An oil paintbrush to apply the paint to the wood
- A computer and printer to print out your chosen template
- Any regular chalk to transfer the printed template into the wood
- Some adhesive tape to secure the printed template on the wood
How To Make Wooden Signs: Instructions
Now, that you have all the materials needed, you can start making your wooden sign. Here are the steps that you need to follow.
Step 1- Stain Or Paint The Wood
At this point, you should decide whether to stain or paint your wood. If you like to stain your wood, apply it using a paint brush. You can remove any excess to make the stain lighter or apply liberally to make the color richer.
If you want to paint your wood, use a chalk paint to give you that nice matte finish. To be more unique, you can layer different colors of chalk paint. After you’re done painting, set aside to dry.
Step 2- Print The Sign That You Want
While your paint or stain is drying, this is the time to use your computer and type the quote or phrase that you want to print. You can check some nice font ideas in Pinterest and use a free online program, PicMonkey, to create the phrase.
To save ink, you can use the font “stencil” where the whole letters are just outlined and not filled entirely. Next, print the quote and cut each word accordingly.
Step 3- Trace The Template
Lay all the words on the wood to make sure that everything is going to fit. Next, flip each paper and cover it with chalk to work like a tracing paper. For a darker background, use a lighter chalk or vice versa.
Once you’re done, lay them again on the wood the way that you want them to look when it’s finished. Secure each paper with an adhesive tape and take a pointed pen to trace around the outside of the letters.
Step 4- Fill The Words With A Paint Marker
After all the words are traced, remove the paper. At this point, you’ll possibly notice the trace marks of your words.
Fill each letter with a paint marker or an acrylic paint. To apply an acrylic paint, use a small brush. After all the letters are done filling, you have the option to hang it already or finish it with a topcoat as described in step 5.
Step 5- Finish With A Topcoat
Use your paintbrush to apply the clear wood finish. To remove any excess, wipe it off with a cheesecloth. Before you hang it, make sure that it’s completely dry.
